Bayonne is looking to construct a pedestrian bridge connecting the South Cove Commons shopping plaza with residential and commercial redevelopment at the former Military Ocean Terminal at Bayonne (MOTBY), now referred to as “The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor.”
This will offer residents of Harbor Pointe easy access to shopping, restaurants, and child daycare. South Cove Commons is currently home to Stop & Shop, T.J. Maxx, HomeGoods, Starbucks, Otaki Hibachi, Houlihan’s, Lightbridge Academy, and more.
City Planner, Suzanne Mack, described the project at a recent meeting of the Bayonne City Council:
“Right now, if you want to go to South Cove to utilize the stores, you have to come out and you have to drive, which we don’t want more cars on the highway there,” Mack said. “Or you would have to walk that little sidewalk that connects them now. This would allow us to build a nice pedestrian walkway. It would be like a wooden walkway, and it would connect them. People would be able to go back and forth.”
